Sheri Paisley (formerly Sheri Bakes) is a Canadian contemporary painter known for her expressive, atmospheric landscapes that explore the intersections between internal experience and natural environments. Her work has been exhibited across North America and Europe and is held in numerous public and private collections.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Sheri Paisley was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 1998.[1]

Career

[edit]

Paisley began exhibiting her work in 2002. Her paintings are characterized by transitions between loosely rendered landscapes and abstract, dreamlike forms. Through her art, she explores themes such as breath, spirit, wind, and the connection between the physical and the unseen.[1]

She is known for blending figurative and abstract elements, often creating works that evoke wind-swept atmospheres and meditative states. Her style is informed by a sensitivity to the invisible forces of nature and human consciousness.

Artistic Evolution

[edit]

At the age of 29, Paisley suffered a stroke that resulted in a condition known as aphantasia, which prevents her from visualizing mental images. This condition marked a turning point in her creative process, shifting her artistic approach toward discovery through spontaneous creation.[2]

Major Exhibitions and Collections

[edit]

Paisley has exhibited her work in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver. Her artwork is included in permanent collections such as:

  • Emaar Properties, Dubai
  • Toronto Dominion Bank
  • UBC Psychiatric Hospital
  • Vancouver General Hospital
  • St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver
  • Swedish Hospital, Seattle[1]

Notable Work

[edit]

In her 2019 solo exhibition, Empathy for the Earth, Paisley addressed environmental concerns through sweeping, emotive imagery intended to evoke the fragility of natural ecosystems.[3]
